Resisting Empire
A Maori theology of church and state
Wiremu Tamihana Tarapipipi te Waharoa was a significant figure in 1800s Aotearoa. With a call to peacemaking and advanced skills in contextual biblical interpretation, this Māori chief was key in the Kingitanga movement, founded two communities of peace, and grappled with deep contradictions through the wars for land that devastated the Waikato. Steve Taylor in this article and video presentation explores the genius of this Christian leader and theologian who resisted empire.
